ANALYSIS Mature athlete who embarked upon a professional baseball career before returning to the gridiron...Well-built pass catcher who has the speed to gain advantage over the defender coming off the line...Uses his hands well to escape the jam, delivering a forceful hand punch... Shows the balance and body control to get in and out of his patterns quickly...Has a good field position awareness and is able to push off the defender to come back for the off-target passes... Will extend for the ball in traffic, showing no fear of contact...Aggressive blocker with the strength to sustain, staying with the defender downfield in order to create lanes for the team’s other receivers...Adjusts well to changes in the secondary slipping through the zone...Very comfortable playing the inside slot...Can handle kickoff return duties in an emergency.

CAREER NOTES Originally signed with the University of Michigan in 1993, but was then selected in the second round by the Atlanta Braves baseball organization...Played at four different levels in the minor league system for Atlanta, Cincinnati and Tampa Bay before quitting the game to return to football...Valuable slot receiver who is called a “coach on the field” for his knowledge of the game and maturity, which calms down his younger teammates in pressure situations...Played in 41 games for the Hurricanes, earning four starting assignments...Finished his career with 64 receptions for 834 yards (13.0 avg) and three touchdowns.

2000 SEASON Recipient of the Dale Melching Leadership Award, given annually to the Hurricane player that is voted the team’s top leader by the coaching staff...Played in ten games, starting vs. McNeese State and Syracuse when Miami opened with a three-receiver formation...Finished with 11 catches for 151 yards (13.7 avg) and a touchdown...Also made a solo tackle and recovered a fumble on the special teams coverage unit. Preseason...Missed most of preseason drills after undergoing shoulder surgery (AC joint). McNeese State...Opened the season with a 24-yard reception and a timely block upfield to clear the way for 23-yard catch-&-run touchdown reception by Miami receiver Daryl Jones. Rutgers...Scored on a nine-yard catch. Washington...Had a pair of catches for nine yards. Florida State...added a 14-yard catch and a fumble recovery. Temple...Did not play (shoulder). Louisiana Tech...Recorded a solo tackle. Syracuse...Had a season-long 36-yard reception. Boston College...Caught a pair of passes for 30 yards. 1999 SEASON Academic All-Big East Conference selection...Played in every game behind Reggie Wayne at split end...Caught 20 passes for 220 yards (11.0 avg) and a touchdown...Added 154 yards on nine kickoff returns (17.1 avg)...Also recorded a solo tackle. Penn State...Gained 82 yards on four kickoff returns and also had a 15-yard catch.

Continued East Carolina...Returned two kickoffs for 31 yards. Florida State...Hauled in five passes for 78 yards and leveled safety Derrick Gibson upfield as UM receiver Santana Moss raced by with an 80-yard touchdown catch. Boston College...Followed with 19 yards on three grabs. Virginia Tech...Made a solo tackle and caught four passes for 31 yards, including a seven-yard score. Temple...Snatched two passes for 14 yards and returned a kickoff 14 yards. Georgia Tech (Gator Bowl)...Scored the team’s first touchdown in a 28-13 win on a 15-yard reception, finishing with 33 yards on four catches.

1998 SEASON Played in every game, starting the final two contests vs. Syracuse and UCLA at split end for an injured Reggie Wayne...Caught a career-high 28 passes for 397 yards (14.2 avg) and a touch-down...Also recorded a solo tackle. East Tennessee State...Gained 30 yards on two catches. Rutgers...With both receiver (King) and quarterback (Kenny Kelly) playing together two summers ago as members of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays minor league organization, it was only fitting that King’s first touchdown (30 yards) would come on a pass from Kelly, finishing the day with four catches for 60 yards and a solo tackle. Pittsburgh...Came off the bench when Wayne was injured to haul in four passes for 50 yards. Syracuse...Earned his first career start, grabbing three passes for 34 yards. UCLA...Had a career day as he made eight catches for 124 yards. North Carolina State (MicronPC.com Bowl)...Had three receptions for 20 yards and a four-yard score.

1997 SEASON Appeared in eight games as a reserve split end, catching five passes for 66 yards (13.2 avg)... Also recorded a pair of tackles. Boston College...Made two catches for 38 yards, including a 22-yarder that set up an eight-yard touchdown run by Edgerrin James. Florida State and West Virginia...Made a tackle in both games. Syracuse...Missed the season finale to get married (married…wedding had been planned long before walking on to UM program).

HIGH SCHOOL All-State and All-County selection as a split end at Stranahan (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) High... Caught 25 passes for 700 yards and four touchdowns as a senior...Also lettered in baseball, batting .492 with seven home runs and 30 stolen bases his senior season.
