For much of the 2001 season, Andre King was a quiet contributor to the Browns’ scout and special teams units during practice and was inactive on game days. In Sunday’s game with Jacksonville, King made the most of a golden opportunity, catching 4 passes for 35 yards including a key 14-yard reception on Cleveland’s final drive. “It felt good to finally get an opportunity to go out and help the team,” King said. A seventh round draft choice who played for Butch Davis at the University of Miami, King was inactive for the Browns’ first 12 games but stayed positive and was able to contribute when called upon. “You just go out and work hard every day,” King said. “You have to be ready to do what you can do when the time comes.” King also saw action on the punt and punt return teams Sunday. He made his special teams value evident in the preseason with a 90-yard kickoff return for a TD at Carolina. “You have to be prepared every week,” King said. “You never know when you’re going to get a chance.” TIM TALKS—Browns QB Tim Couch said Monday he was still trying to figure out exactly what happened in the final minutes of Sunday’s loss. “I didn’t even think it was a question of whether (Quincy Morgan) caught it or not,” he said of the controversial fourth down play that was later overturned. The play was ruled a reception and Couch got the Cleveland offense to the line quickly. He killed the clock with a spike on the next play, but Couch said something else was brewing. “It was going to be a fake spike,” Couch said. “I made eye contact with Kevin Johnson and we were going for the endzone.” Couch double-clutched the spike, but an oncoming pass rusher forced him to abandon the trick play and kill the clock. The Jaguars argued that Couch should have been called for intentional grounding on the play. “I thought (the spike) is what they were questioning when the officials got together,” Couch said. The replay official ruled that Morgan dropped the ball, setting off a frenzy in Cleveland Browns Stadium. “They probably would have thrown more than bottles if I would’ve thrown a touchdown to KJ, then had it overturned,” Couch said. ON THE DEFENSIVE--Jamir Miller turned in another outstanding performance Sunday with three sacks, giving him 13 on the year. A reporter asked Miller Monday if he had satisfied his goals for the season. “My goal was double digits,” Miller said. “But I never said what digit.” Asked a similar question last week, Davis said Miller “could finish with 15 or 16 sacks. You never know how he’s going to finish up the season.” Davis said rookie DT Gerard Warren turned in his third straight “monster performance” Sunday. Warren recorded a team-high 10 tackles and also had a sack. |
